TÜV SÜD and DIBt approval of ventilation devices

Testing of ventilation devices by TÜV SÜD

As an accredited test laboratory, TÜV SÜD tests ventilation devices with regard to the following properties:

  • measurement
  • air flow
  • thermal efficiency of heat recovery / heat recovery
  • Electric power consumption

This is done according to the specifications of the DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik), which determines the test criteria. When the measurements have been completed, a test report is created. The data from the TÜV SÜD test report form the basis for the DIBt approval, which can then be applied for. The DIBt issues, among other things, general building inspectorate approvals for building products and types. It uses the values determined by an independent institute (e.g. TÜV SÜD, TZWL, HLK) and extends them to include the evaluation of the materials for fire safety and pollutant emissions. After the test, the DIBt issues an approval number and provides a corresponding document. As part of the building inspection approval process, the product parameters are also determined and specified that are to be used as evidence of the limitation of the annual primary energy requirement of a building in accordance with the Energy Saving Ordinance.

DIBt approval for ventilation units

Ready-to-connect ventilation units that are manufactured to be permanently installed and operated in buildings are construction products. In this context, the model building regulations and the individual state building regulations require a building inspection certificate of usability for ventilation devices. Accordingly, construction products (such as ventilation systems) that are used for the construction, modification and maintenance of structural systems may only be used if their usability in the corresponding area of application has been proven and they are marked with the so-called “Ü-mark” (conformity mark).

The sample ventilation system guideline (M-LüAR)

The model guideline on fire protection requirements for ventilation systems (model ventilation system guideline / M-LüAR) defines, among other things, requirements for the fire behavior of building materials, the fire resistance of ventilation ducts and shut-off devices of ventilation systems, the installation of ventilation ducts as well as requirements for facilities for air treatment and Ventilation centers (such as heat recovery systems).

DIBt approval procedure and approval notice

The approval process is a flexible assessment process that can be based on a case-by-case assessment to reflect the state of the art of the devices to be approved. On request, the DIBt issues such general building inspectorate approvals for decentralized (and centralized) ventilation devices. In addition, the DIBt appoints the expert body to carry out the tests required as part of the approval process, such as TÜV SÜD.

Only the ventilation units themselves are subject to approval, but not the entire ventilation system installed on site. If the conformity of the ventilation unit with the approval provisions is confirmed as part of the approval process, the manufacturer must affix the conformity mark “Ü” to the ventilation unit. The intended use of the device was determined accordingly in the process.

A notification of approval contains the description of the subject of approval, the specification of the area of application, the proof of conformity (Ü mark) and other provisions for the construction product. This includes provisions relating to properties, manufacture, packaging, labeling and, if applicable, regulations on design and dimensioning, execution and use, and maintenance and servicing.
